Christmas Ghost first appeared on my Still Life album and is a story about remembering a lost love at Christmas. It was rerecorded in 2007. | The second of twelve free downloads for Christmas is a live video version of Joni Mitchell's River, performed by Chill and I at The Box Christmas Party in Crewe. River is taken from my Another Christmas EP which was recorded in 2007. The first version I heard of River was by Robert Downey Jnr in the Ally McBeal TV series, although I've since come across numerous versions of the songs. It's usually performed on piano but this live version features us both on guitar. The Another Christmas EP also features the title track Another Christmas (also included on the Octagon album), the 2007 version of Christmas Ghost which is also available as yesterday's podcast episode, and my recorded version of River featuring Nigel Stonier on piano. | A cover of the Aimee Mann song, Thirty One Today. It was recorded using GarageBand on the Mac in my home studio. It's the first time I've used the program for anything more sophisticated than an audio notepad so it's been an interesting learning curve. I'm sure I'll become better at using it as time goes on.
All the instruments are played live, generally in a single take (mainly because I've yet to master drop ins!). I attempted to use the automatic tuner and quantize features but neither seemed to work as they should so it's all as it was recorded, with just a handful of effects.
It features guitar, bass and mandolin along with the vocals and backing vocals.
